Rising Signs

Your rising sign — also called the Ascendant, or ASC — is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It changes every two hours, which is why birth time matters so much: two people born on the same day but at different times can have completely different rising signs.

Where your Sun sign describes who you are at your core — your essential identity, your vitality, your conscious will — your rising sign describes how you appear to others before they know you well. It shapes your physical appearance, your manner, the first impression you make, and the lens through which you experience the world.

Many people find their rising sign describes them more accurately than their Sun sign, especially in social situations. The Sun is who you are when you are comfortable. The Ascendant is who you are when you walk into a room.

The rising sign also determines the order of houses in your chart. Whatever sign is rising becomes the cusp of your First House, and the remaining 11 houses follow in sequence. This is why birth time changes everything — without it, the house system cannot be calculated.
