The part of you that nobody sees

The Sun tells the world who you are. The Moon tells you what you need. Most people spend their lives confusing the two — performing their Sun while their Moon starves, then wondering why they feel empty despite doing everything right.

The Moon is the oldest, most primal part of the chart. Before you learned to perform, before you built an identity, before you understood what the world expected of you — there was the Moon. Your first feeling. Your automatic response. The thing you reach for when nobody is watching.

In astrology, the Moon governs the unconscious mind: the instincts that fire before thought, the emotional patterns inherited from childhood, the needs that must be met before anything else can function. Ignore your Moon long enough and it will find other ways to make itself heard — through the body, through compulsive behaviour, through the sudden collapse of things that looked perfectly fine on the surface.

The Moon also governs memory. Not the factual recall of Mercury, but the felt memory — the way a smell can transport you back twenty years, the way certain people make you feel six years old again, the emotional residue that never quite leaves. The past is always present in the Moon. This is its gift and its trap.

Unlike the Sun, which stays in one sign for a month, the Moon changes signs every two and a half days. This is why astrologers check the daily Moon sign — it colours the emotional atmosphere for everyone, like a weather system moving through.

“The Sun tells me who you are trying to be. The Moon tells me who you actually are at 3am when it all falls apart. I trust the Moon.”

Our Moon, rendered

384,400 kilometres away. No atmosphere. Craters from four billion years of impacts, preserved perfectly in a world with no wind or rain to erode them. The same face always turned toward Earth — tidally locked, permanently keeping one side in darkness from our view.

The largest craters visible are older than life on Earth. The lighter highlands are ancient crust; the darker plains are ancient lava flows called maria. It is, as a physical object, genuinely ancient beyond comprehension.

The eight Moon phases

The Moon completes one full cycle from New to Full and back again in 29.5 days. Each phase carries its own energy and is used in astrology — and in many spiritual traditions — to time intentions, actions, and releases.

🌑
New Moon
Beginning. Invisible in the sky. Plant seeds, set intentions, begin new chapters. What you start here grows toward the Full Moon.
🌒
Waxing Crescent
Building. The first sliver of light. Take initial steps toward New Moon intentions. Gather momentum.
🌓
First Quarter
Decision. Half-lit. Challenges arise that test your commitment to what you began. Push through or refine.
🌔
Waxing Gibbous
Refinement. Nearly full. Adjust, perfect, prepare. The work is almost done. Patience.
🌕
Full Moon
Culmination. Maximum illumination. Things come to completion, into the light. Emotions peak. What was hidden is now visible.
🌖
Waning Gibbous
Gratitude. Share what you have learned. Teach, give, distribute. The harvest season of the cycle.
🌗
Last Quarter
Release. Let go of what no longer serves. Forgive. Clear space for the next New Moon.
🌘
Waning Crescent
Rest. The final sliver before dark. Retreat, reflect, restore. Prepare for the next beginning.

Moon through the signs

Your Moon sign describes your emotional instincts, what you need to feel safe, and how you respond automatically under pressure. Unlike your Sun sign, most people are not consciously aware of their Moon sign in action — it operates below the level of deliberate choice.

What the Moon governs

The emotional body. Every feeling — joy, grief, longing, contentment — passes through the Moon. It does not create emotion so much as it is the vessel through which all emotion moves. A strongly placed Moon feels deeply and fluidly. A challenged Moon may feel too much, too little, or in ways that confuse even its owner.

The mother and early home. The Moon represents the maternal archetype and the conditioning of early childhood. How you were nurtured — or not — is written into the Moon. How you nurture others follows the same pattern, unless you do the work to change it.

Instinct and habit. The unconscious patterns that run automatically, the responses that bypass rational thought entirely — these belong to the Moon. Habits, both useful and destructive, are Moon territory.

The body and its rhythms. The stomach, breasts, womb, fluids — the Moon governs the body’s tidal nature. The menstrual cycle, sleep rhythms, hunger and appetite all fall under lunar domain.

The public. In mundane astrology, the Moon represents the masses, the general population, popular opinion. It is one reason astrologers track the Moon’s sign when predicting public mood.

“Your Moon sign is not who you are. It is what you need. The sooner you stop pretending you do not need it, the better everything gets.”

The Moon — frequently asked

How do I find my Moon sign?

You need your date, time and place of birth. Because the Moon changes signs every 2.5 days, birth time is essential — without it you cannot be certain which sign the Moon was in. If you were born near a sign change and do not know your time, the Moon’s sign is uncertain. Generate your free natal chart above to find yours instantly.

Is the Moon sign more important than the Sun sign?

Neither is more important — they operate on different levels. The Sun is your conscious identity and life direction. The Moon is your emotional nature and unconscious needs. Many people identify more strongly with their Moon sign than their Sun sign, particularly in early life or during emotional stress, because the Moon is the older, more automatic layer of the self.

What does the daily Moon sign mean?

As the Moon moves through a sign, it colours the emotional atmosphere for everyone. A Moon in Scorpio day has a different quality to a Moon in Gemini day — one is intense and investigative, the other light and scattered. Astrologers use the daily Moon sign to time activities: emotional conversations during a water Moon, practical tasks during an earth Moon, social events during an air Moon.

What is a Void of Course Moon?

After the Moon makes its last major aspect to another planet and before it enters a new sign, it is said to be Void of Course. Traditional astrologers advise against starting important new ventures during this period — things begun under a Void Moon tend to come to nothing, or develop in unexpected and often disappointing directions. Check the Moon Calendar for Void of Course times.
